Laceration
What it is
What you can do at home
- Wash your hand with soap and water before and after touching the cut.
- If the cut is on a finger, hand, foot, or toe, remove any rings or bracelets.
- If the cut is bleeding, apply pressure for a few minutes with a clean cloth or bandage.
- If the cut is bleeding heavily or the injured person feels their heartbeat in the wound, raise the injured arm or leg above the level of the heart.
- Once the bleeding has slowed, gently clean the wound with tap water and mild fragrance-free soap for a few minutes.
- Once the bleeding has stopped, cover the cut with a bandage. Change the bandage once a day or whenever it becomes dirty.
- To help relieve pain, take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). When in doubt, ask a pharmacist for advice.
Important: Ibuprofen is contraindicated for children under 6 months of age.
It is important to check whether the injured person’s tetanus vaccination is up to date.
