Nosebleed

Epistaxis

What it is

A nosebleed occurs when blood flows from one or both nostrils. It happens when small blood vessels inside the nose break. Most of the time, it is not serious and the bleeding stops on its own.

What you can do at home

What to do
  • Move to a quiet place without noise or commotion.
  • Sit down and lean the head slightly forward.

To stop the bleeding

  • Breathe through your mouth.
  • Pinch the soft part of the nose, just below the bony bridge, for 10 to 15 minutes without releasing the pressure.
  • Apply cold.
  • Use a cold compress, an ice pack, a bag of frozen vegetables or a cold gel pack.
  • Always place a cloth between the skin and the cold source to protect the skin.
  • If the bleeding continues after 10 to 15 minutes, pinch the nose again for another 10 to 15 minutes.

Once the bleeding has stopped

  • Do not rub or pick inside your nose.
  • Avoid spicy foods and very hot drinks.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for 24 hours.
  • Try to avoid blowing your nose for 24 hours.

For people taking blood thinners:  monitor the bleeding and follow the recommendations provided by a healthcare professional.
